About

Hi there, cartographers!

Welcome to the Philosophy department’s newest initiative at the University of Melbourne!

We are a chapter of the international organisation Minorities and Philosophy, based at the University of Melbourne, Australia. We came about in 2018 when a group of postgraduate, honours, and undergraduate students met with a plan to bring together other philosophers from minority backgrounds to share and connect with their peers.

We aim to:

  • Examine and address issues of minority participation in academic philosophy,
  • foster a sense of community and solidarity between minority students and faculty in philosophy,
  • provide the opportunity for students to be exposed to and develop an interest in philosophy, particularly research from underrepresented philosophers,
  • and allow students to express their own philosophical ideas to a receptive audience.

You can find the MAP Melb Uni Constitution here. It provides detailed information about how our chapter operates.

Membership is open to anyone affiliated with the University of Melbourne, and associate membership is open to anyone else who shares our aims. You don’t need to identify as a member of a minority to participate! All members are welcome at our events, and support and feedback from anyone who is interested in working with us is greatly appreciated.

Please follow the MAP Melb Uni Facebook page for up-to-date information about events, useful links, and discussion!
